In our laboratory, we focus on the interactions between marine ecological systems, co-create knowledge in collaboration with the society and promote international education and research in a study of marine conservation policy.
Looking at interaction between ecological systems and social systems
Japan is blessed by the marine diversities, from the sub-arctic ecosystems for sea ices to the tropical ecosystems with coral reefs. We look at interactions between ecological systems and social systems to find desirable measures to harmonize the use and the conservation of marine resoruces.
Co-creation of knowledge in collaboration with the society
Collaboration between science and diverse stakeholders is vital to achieve sustainable use of marine resources. We promote the co-creation of knowledge by conducting transdisciplinary research based on the collaboration with stakeholders (e.g., international organizations, governments, research finding agencies, international cooperation agencies, private sectors, civil society, media) across the boundaries of science and society.
Promotion of international education and research
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) define ocean-related goals, such as SDG13 (Climate action) and SDG14 (Life below water). The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development was launched in 2021 as an eff ort to achieve the ocean-related goals of the SDGs. Our laboratory will contribute to these eff ort with disseminating knowledge and technology of Japan that might be useful for other countries especially in the Asia-Pacific region.
